Collection: Ultra-Low Temperature Freezers

Authorized Yamato Scientific Dealer · Ships From US Inventory

−40°C to −85°C storage for biorepositories, clinical labs and pharmaceutical inventory — chest, upright and undercounter, 2 to 31 cu.ft., with battery-backed alarms and power-failure recovery.

Chest vs Upright

Three Formats

Cold retention, floor space, and how you need to reach your samples.

Chest — Horizontal

Top-opening, 2 to 27 cu.ft. (ULF-001C–901C). Best cold-air retention, because cold air stays put when the lid opens, and the widest capacity range.

ULF301C, 9 cu.ft. →

Upright — Vertical

Front-opening with 4 adjustable shelves across 5 compartments, 13 to 31 cu.ft. (ULF-401U–901U). Smaller floor footprint and far easier to organize by rack.

ULF401U, 13 cu.ft. →

Undercounter

Compact mini-chest units at 2 and 3 cu.ft. (ULF-101UN, ULF-201UN), ETL listed and running on a standard 115V NEMA 5-15P plug — no special circuit.

ULF101UN, 2 cu.ft. →

Control & Monitoring

Standard vs Platinum

Same cascade refrigeration. The difference is how the freezer tells you something is wrong.

Capability Standard (C / U / UN) Platinum (CP / UP)
Controller Digital, dual display, tamper-proof lockout Touch screen, Hi/Low alarm
Remote notification Alarm relay for remote hook-up Email & SMS notification
Data logging Viewable graph, download via USB or FTP
Remote access VNC from PC or smart device
Dry contacts Alarm-relay + power-failure
Security Lockout Multi-level security
Probe access port ½″ access port

Choose Platinum when storage is audit-regulated or unattended overnight; Standard covers routine sample storage with staff on site. Comparing against −40°C storage? See Low-Temperature Freezers or the Freezer Buying Guide.

Why Yamato ULF

Built to Hold −85°C

Cascade Refrigeration

Two hermetic compressors for rapid pull-down, with a low stage that runs only on demand.

Battery-Backed Alarm

Audible and visual alarm on mechanical or electrical failure, with over/under-temperature settings.

Power-Failure Recovery

An automatic timer restarts the unit after an interruption — no manual intervention.

Air-Cooled, CFC-Free

Air-cooled condenser with no liquid coolant; R-508B and R-404A refrigerants, CFC- and HCFC-free.

Good to Know

Ultra-Low Freezer FAQs

Chest or upright — which should I choose?

Chest models retain cold better because cold air does not fall out when the lid is raised, and they span the widest capacity range. Uprights use far less floor space and are much easier to organize and retrieve from, with four adjustable shelves across five compartments. Pick chest for long-term archival storage, upright for daily access.

What is the difference between Standard and Platinum?

The refrigeration is the same. Platinum adds a touch-screen controller with email and SMS notification, alarm-relay and power-failure dry contacts, a viewable temperature graph, data logging downloadable by USB or FTP, multi-level security, VNC remote access, and a half-inch probe access port. Choose Platinum when storage is audit-regulated or left unattended.

Do I need a special electrical circuit?

It depends on the model. The undercounter units run on a standard 115V NEMA 5-15P plug and are ETL listed. Larger chest and upright freezers have their own electrical requirements, so send us the model you are considering and your available circuit and we will confirm before you order.

What happens if the power fails?

An automatic timer system restarts the freezer once power returns, and the battery-backed alarm signals the failure while it is happening. The alarm relay can also be wired into building monitoring, and Platinum models will send email or SMS.

Is back-up available if the refrigeration fails?

Yes. Optional CO2 and liquid-nitrogen back-up systems are available, along with inventory racks, a chart recorder, and cold-safety gloves. Tell us your sample-box or rack count and we will spec the right combination.
