Common questions

Glass or plastic?

Borosilicate glass takes heat, solvents and repeated autoclaving, and is the choice where the tube has to survive the process. Polypropylene autoclaves and resists breakage but is translucent; polystyrene is optically clear and cheap but neither autoclavable nor solvent-resistant.

What makes a culture tube different from a test tube?

A culture tube has a heavier, more uniform wall and is supplied to take a closure, because it is meant to hold a growing culture rather than serve as general glassware. Plain test tubes are thinner-walled and often rimless.

How do I pick a rack that fits?

By outside diameter in millimetres — 12 mm, 13 mm, 16 mm and so on. Volume does not determine fit; two tubes of the same volume can have different diameters and lengths.
