How to choose

Amber or clear?

Amber glass blocks most ultraviolet and short-wavelength visible light, which is what light-sensitive reagents need — many stains, silver salts, peroxides and a long list of organics degrade in clear glass on an open shelf. Clear is right where you need to see the contents or the fill level, and where light is not a factor.

Glass or plastic?

Glass is inert to nearly everything, will not leach into the contents, and takes heat and autoclaving. Plastic will not break, weighs far less and is safer where a bottle is carried or used outside the lab — but it is permeable to some solvents and can leach plasticiser. Store organics and long-term standards in glass.

What is GL45 and does it matter?

GL45 is a standardised 45 mm screw-thread finish. It matters because it is what lets caps, pouring rings, dispensing systems and tubing connectors from different makers fit the same bottle. If a bottle will ever take a bottle-top dispenser or a cap with ports, a standard thread is what makes that possible.
