Common questions

Skirted, semi-skirted or non-skirted — which do I need?

The skirt is what the plate sits on. A full skirt is rigid, seats reliably in automation and is the usual choice for robotic handling. A semi-skirt suits manual work and many cyclers while still allowing a barcode. Non-skirted is the lightest and cheapest but needs a support rack. The block in your thermal cycler decides which will seat correctly.

Will a 96-well plate fit my cycler?

The 96-well footprint is standardised, but block depth and skirt clearance are not identical across instruments. Check the plate style your cycler specifies — a plate that seats badly gives uneven heating across the block.

What are barcoded plates for?

A printed, machine-readable code on the plate lets a LIMS or a reader tie the physical plate to its record without hand transcription. It matters most where plates move between instruments or leave the lab.
