ULT Freezer Buying Guide: Chest vs Upright, Siting and Power

An ultra-low temperature freezer is the most consequential single purchase most labs make, and the specification that decides it is rarely capacity. What is inside a ULT freezer is usually worth more than the freezer. That reframes the whole decision: you are not buying cold storage, you are buying the probability that a decade of samples survives the next power failure.

Chest, Upright or Undercounter
This is the first fork, and access frequency decides it — not volume.
Chest freezers hold their temperature far better when opened, because cold air is dense and stays in the cabinet rather than spilling out of a vertical door. That makes them the right choice for archival collections pulled occasionally. The cost is ergonomic: retrieving one box from the bottom of a deep chest means lifting the racks above it, and floor area per cubic foot is higher.
Upright freezers put every rack at arm's height behind a front door and use less floor space per cubic foot. They suit working inventory accessed daily. The trade is a larger cold-air spill on every opening and, consequently, more compressor work.
Undercounter units — the ULF101UN at 2 cu.ft. and ULF201UN at 3 cu.ft. — put deep-cold storage at the point of use in a bench run. They cost more per cubic foot than a comparable chest unit; you are paying for the placement, which is often worth it for a working aliquot store next to the bench that uses it.
Capacity and Rack Count
Rack capacity translates volume into something you can actually plan against. The chest range scales like this:

Note the weight column. A 5 cu.ft. chest unit is 525 lb empty, before racks and samples. Floor loading and the route from loading dock to lab are real constraints on upper floors — worth checking before the order, not after delivery.

−85 °C or −80 °C: Check the Model
Most of the Yamato ULF range is rated −40 °C to −85 °C. The largest units are not. The 21 cu.ft. ULF701C, the 27 cu.ft. ULF901C, and the 28 and 31 cu.ft. uprights are rated −40 °C to −80 °C. For the great majority of protocols, which specify −80 °C, this is immaterial. If yours specifies colder, confirm the individual model rating rather than assuming the series figure — it changes at the top of the range.
The cooling itself is cascade refrigeration: two hermetic compressors running CFC-free R-508B and CFC- and HCFC-free R-404A. Condensing is air-cooled through two heavy-duty fans, which means no liquid coolant line and a simpler installation.
Power and Heat: The Two Site Constraints
Electrical. The ULF units are ordered for a specific supply — 115 V, 208 V or 230 V at 60 Hz single-phase, or 220 V at 50/60 Hz. This is a model selection, not a field-configurable switch, so confirm the circuit before ordering. Given two compressors and their startup current, a dedicated circuit is the sane choice.
Heat rejection. An air-cooled ULT freezer is, from the room's point of view, a heater. Everything it draws leaves as warm air through the condenser. Put three of them in a small room without cooling and ambient temperature climbs, which makes every unit work harder and shortens compressor life. Plan the room's ventilation with the purchase and respect the clearance around the condenser.
Alarms and Failure Planning
Every ULF unit ships with a battery-operated alarm that fires audibly and visually on mechanical or electrical failure, with configurable over- and under-temperature set points, a silencing switch and a battery test switch. Two features matter more than the alarm itself:
- The remote alarm relay. An alarm sounding in an empty building at 2 a.m. protects nothing. The relay lets the alert reach facilities monitoring or an on-call phone.
- Automatic power-failure recovery. A timer system restarts the unit once power returns, rather than leaving it off until someone notices.
A ½ in access port takes an external probe for independent monitoring, and CO₂ and LN₂ back-up systems, chart recorders, racks and cold-safety gloves are available as accessories. For an irreplaceable collection, a back-up system is cheap insurance against the one failure mode alarms cannot fix.
The range is built in the USA and UL Listed, with a 14-gauge zinc-coated galvanized steel chamber inside a 16-gauge steel exterior.
