Common questions

Internal or external thread?

On an external-thread vial the cap seals on the outside, so no thread is in contact with the sample and the vial is easier to fill and to clean. Internal-thread vials take up less space in a box for the same volume. Both are widely used; the choice is usually a lab convention.

Can these go into liquid nitrogen?

Vapour-phase storage is the normal case. Direct immersion in liquid nitrogen risks nitrogen entering the vial and expanding violently on warming, so it needs a vial specifically rated for immersion and, usually, a secondary sleeve. Check the individual listing before immersing.

Will the boxes fit my freezer rack?

Cryogenic boxes follow standard 2 in. and 3 in. heights on a common footprint, which is what upright-freezer racks and chest-freezer drawers are built around. The listing states the box height and how many vials it holds.
