How to Specify Heating & Cooling

Heat the sample directly

The heat source touches the vessel — a plate, an aluminium block, or a bath. Fastest to set up, and the right answer whenever the sample sits in a tube, flask or beaker on the bench.

Control a jacket or an external loop

A circulator pumps fluid through a jacketed reactor, a condenser or a cold trap. This is what you buy when the temperature has to be held on a whole process, not a single vessel — and where the useful range runs well below and above what a bath can reach.

Dry, evaporate and drive off solvent

Removing mass rather than holding a setpoint. Forced-air ovens for straightforward drying, vacuum ovens when the material cannot take the temperature that atmospheric drying would need.

Hold warm, or heat a drum

Long-duration warmth rather than a process step — culture and sample incubation on the bench, and blanket heaters that bring a pail or a 55-gallon drum back to a workable viscosity.

Do I need a bath circulator or a recirculating chiller?
A recirculating chiller only removes heat. It pumps coolant in a closed loop to a condenser, a rotary evaporator or a reactor jacket and holds it cold, which is all most solvent-recovery and condenser duty ever needs. A refrigerated bath circulator both heats and cools, has an open bath you can immerse vessels in, and drives an external loop as well — so it covers a process that has to be taken up as well as down. If your temperature only ever goes one direction, the chiller is the cheaper and simpler machine.
What temperature range should I actually specify?
Specify the range your process needs at the vessel, then allow headroom at both ends, because a unit working at the very edge of its span runs continuously and controls poorly. Cooling capacity also falls as the setpoint drops — a chiller rated to a low temperature delivers far fewer watts down there than it does near ambient. Tell us the fluid, the volume, the target temperature and the heat load, and we will confirm the unit has real capacity at your setpoint rather than just a number on the datasheet.
Why choose a vacuum oven over a forced-air oven?
Vacuum lowers the boiling point, so a vacuum oven removes solvent or moisture at a much lower temperature than an atmospheric oven would need. That matters when the material degrades, oxidises or discolours with heat. A forced-air oven is simpler, faster to load and cheaper to run, and it is the better choice for routine drying of anything thermally stable.
Can a hotplate stirrer replace a water bath?
For a single vessel, often yes — a hotplate stirrer heats and agitates in one footprint, and a glass-ceramic top reaches temperatures no water bath can. A bath still wins when you need several vessels held at an identical, gentle temperature, or when direct contact with a hot plate would create hot spots in a viscous or heat-sensitive sample. Water baths also cap out near boiling, which is a limit rather than a drawback for most biological work.
What do I need to tell you to get the right unit?
Five things settle almost every specification: the temperature range at the sample, the volume or heat load, whether you are heating, cooling or both, the fluid involved, and your facility power — voltage, phase and available amperage. Large chillers and dynamic temperature control systems in particular often need three-phase, and that is worth confirming before an order rather than on the loading dock.
