Centrifuge Cost of Ownership: Rotors, Refrigeration and Choosing One Platform
Share
At LabSupplies.com, we look at centrifuge cost of ownership the way lab managers who replace instruments do: the frame is one line, and rotors, buckets, adapters, refrigeration, bench space, power and wear parts make up the rest. The brand you standardize on decides how much of that you buy twice. This guide compares the platforms we carry from Hermle, LW Scientific and Benchmark Scientific on exactly those lines.

Rotors Are the Long-Term Spend
A centrifuge frame lasts years; the rotors and adapters get added as the work changes. On a platform where rotors move between frames, every rotor you buy keeps its value when you add or replace a frame.
Hermle: Z326 rotors across the universal and high-speed frames
Hermle lists its Z326-series rotors across the Z307, Z327, Z366, Z446, Z32-HK and Z36-HK, and several fit the floor-standing Z496. The same rotor runs faster in a higher-rated frame:
| Rotor | Z307 | Z327 / Z327-K | Z446 / Z446-K | Z32-HK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Z326-2420H 24 × 1.5/2.0 mL, sealed | 14,000 rpm / 18,624 × g | 15,000 rpm / 21,379 × g | 16,000 rpm / 24,325 × g | 20,000 rpm / 38,007 × g |
| Z326-3020H 30 × 1.5 mL | 12,000 rpm / 15,131 × g | 12,000 rpm / 15,131 × g | 15,000 rpm / 23,643 × g | 17,000 rpm / 30,368 × g |
| Z326-02MP 2 microplates | 4,500 rpm / 2,716 × g | 4,500 rpm / 2,716 × g | 4,500 rpm / 2,716 × g | 4,500 rpm / 2,716 × g |
Two larger rotors bridge into the floor-standing range: the Z326-1050 10 × 50 mL conical rotor is listed for the Z327 through the Z496-K (10,500 rpm and 16,022 × g there), and the Z366-06250 6 × 250 mL fixed-angle rotor for the Z366, Z446, Z36-HK and Z496. Adapters follow the same pattern: the Z326-15-A20 adapter for 1.5/2.0 mL tubes is listed for ten Hermle models.

LW Scientific: one base, several rotors
LW Scientific builds its E8, MXU TOUCH and MX12 centrifuges in the USA and sells rotors as separate part numbers. The ZipCombo unit ZCP-BX7D-77T3 ships without rotors and takes three: the 6-place microtube ZCP-RT06-02MT, the 12-place microhematocrit ZCP-RT12-77HE and the 16-place PCR strip ZCP-RT16-7PCR. The MX5 benchtop line works the same way, with an 8-place 15 mL swing-out rotor C5P-RT08-15R1, a 24-place bucket kit C5R-KIT7-15ML and an 8-place 50 mL bucket kit M5R-KIT7-8P50.
Benchmark Scientific: choose the rotor at order time
The Benchmark MC-24R refrigerated microcentrifuge comes two ways: C2417-R with the COMBI-Rotor for 24 × 1.5/2.0 mL tubes plus two PCR strips, or C2417-R-NR without a rotor, so a lab with a different rotor in mind does not pay for one it will not use.
Refrigeration: Price, Power and Bench Space
On Hermle's universal frames, the refrigerated version of the same frame costs roughly half again as much as the ambient one. On microcentrifuges, such as the Hermle Z216-M and Z216-MK, it is about double, and the refrigerated unit weighs 77 lb against 37.4 lb. Refrigeration also changes the footprint and the power draw:
| Ambient → refrigerated | Footprint (W × D × H) | Weight | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z327 → Z327-K | 15.7 × 19 × 14 in → 15.7 × 27.5 × 14 in | 95 lb → 132 lb | 460 W → 660 W |
| Z366 → Z366-K | 17 × 20 × 14.2 in → 28.3 × 20 × 14.2 in | 114 lb → 169 lb | 520 W → 785 W |
| Z446 → Z446-K | 21.3 × 26.4 × 15.4 in → 28.7 × 26.4 × 15.4 in | 174 lb → 244 lb | 600 W → 1,630 W |
Buy refrigeration for heat-sensitive samples such as proteins, nucleic acids and live cells, and for long high-speed runs that warm the chamber. If the lab already has a cold room, the Benchmark MC-24 C2417 and MC-12 C1612 are rated cold-room safe, which covers 4 °C microtube work without a compressor on the bench.

Motors and Wear Parts
A brushless drive has no carbon brushes to replace. Benchmark describes the MC-12 C1612 drive as brushless and maintenance-free, and LW Scientific's CMC-1224-77T3 combo centrifuge runs a brushless motor driving a 12-place test tube rotor and a 24-place microcrit rotor. If you run older brushed units, keep a brush pair on the shelf: LW Scientific sells CMP-BRSH-PR77 motor brushes for its older M24 and V24 centrifuges.
The other wear items are tube shields, bucket inserts and power parts. LW Scientific's tube shields, buckets and inserts and power cords and replacement parts are sold by part number, which keeps older clinical centrifuges in service. Benchmark Scientific lists a two-year warranty on its MyFuge, MC-series, LC-8 and Sprint centrifuges.

Containment: Sealed Rotors and Buckets
At BSL-2, the CDC's BMBL allows infectious material to be centrifuged on the open bench only in sealed rotors or safety cups that are loaded and opened in a biosafety cabinet. For clinical specimens, OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) requires procedures that minimize splashing, spraying and droplets. Price the sealed option in from the start: Hermle's Z326-2420H has a hermetically sealed metal lid, and the Z326-100H swing-out rotor comes with hermetically sealed buckets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Hermle rotors fit different Hermle centrifuge models?
Many Z326-series rotors do. The Z326-2420H 24 × 1.5/2.0 mL sealed rotor is listed for eight Hermle frames from the Z307 to the Z32-HK, and the Z326-02MP microplate rotor for nine. Each rotor has its own speed limit in each frame, so check the listed figure for your model.
Why does the same rotor have a different maximum speed in different centrifuges?
The rated speed belongs to the rotor and frame together. The Z326-2420H is listed at 14,000 rpm and 18,624 × g in a Z307, 15,000 rpm and 21,379 × g in a Z327, 16,000 rpm and 24,325 × g in a Z446, and 20,000 rpm and 38,007 × g in a Z32-HK. Never run a rotor above the figure listed for the frame it is in.
Do I need a refrigerated centrifuge?
You need one for heat-sensitive samples such as proteins, nucleic acids and live cells, or for long high-speed runs that warm the chamber. If the lab already has a cold room, a cold-room-safe ambient microcentrifuge such as the Benchmark MC-24 (C2417) or MC-12 (C1612) can cover 4 °C work at a lower cost, weight and power draw.
Is a brushless centrifuge motor worth it?
For a centrifuge that runs daily, yes. A brushless drive has no carbon brushes to wear out, which is why Benchmark describes the MC-12 as maintenance-free. Brushed motors need new brushes over time; LW Scientific sells the CMP-BRSH-PR77 brush pair for its older M24 and V24 centrifuges.
Which rotors fit the LW Scientific ZipCombo?
Three: the 6-place microtube rotor ZCP-RT06-02MT for 0.5 to 2.0 mL tubes, the 12-place microhematocrit rotor ZCP-RT12-77HE and the 16-place PCR strip rotor ZCP-RT16-7PCR. The ZipCombo unit ZCP-BX7D-77T3 ships without rotors, so one base can cover all three workflows.
