Buying Brand-Name Lab Equipment: Order by the Full Catalog Number
Share
At LabSupplies.com, brand-name lab equipment orders rarely go wrong on the brand. They go wrong on the catalog number: a 230 V centrifuge reaches a 120 V bench, or a refrigerated frame arrives without the rotor the lab assumed was in the box. When you standardize on Hermle, Yamato Scientific, Benchmark Scientific or LW Scientific, the model name starts the specification. The full catalog number finishes it.

Why Labs Standardize on One Equipment Brand
Three reasons justify standardizing on one brand, and they are the reasons a procurement office will ask you to write down.
- Accessories carry over. Hermle lists its Z326-series rotors across its universal and high-speed frames. The Z326-02MP microplate rotor is listed for nine models, from the Z307 to the Z36-HK. A lab with those rotors on the shelf buys a frame, not a system.
- Methods transfer. A method written around one instrument's speed, temperature and program settings moves to the same model without re-work.
- One parts list, one control layout. Staff train once, and replacement parts such as tube shields, buckets and power cords come from one catalog.
How Procurement Reads a Brand-Name Request
Federal buyers work from FAR 11.104, which allows a brand name or equal description when it also lists the salient physical, functional or performance characteristics an equal item must meet. Labs spending federal grant money follow 2 CFR 200.320, which permits a noncompetitive purchase in a short list of circumstances, one of them being a transaction that can only be filled by a single source. Your procurement office makes that call. Your part is to hand them the characteristics, stated as numbers:
| Equipment | Salient characteristics to list | Example from the catalog |
|---|---|---|
| Centrifuge | Maximum RCF (× g), rotor capacity, temperature range if refrigerated, voltage and plug, footprint | Hermle Z366-K: 4 × 250 mL, −20 °C to 40 °C, 28.3 × 20 × 14.2 in |
| Oven | Chamber volume, maximum temperature, natural or forced convection, voltage | Yamato DX602C: 153 L, natural convection, to 280 °C |
| Ultra-low freezer | Capacity in cu ft, temperature range, rack count, electrical configuration | Yamato ULF901C: 27 cu ft, −40 °C to −80 °C, 48 racks |
| Microcentrifuge | Maximum RCF, tube format, refrigeration, rotor included or not | Benchmark MC-24R C2417-R: 16,800 × g, 24 × 1.5/2.0 mL |
If a characteristic only one brand meets is the reason for the request, say so plainly: "fits the Z326-1050 rotor already in service" is a fact a buyer can verify. "Preferred brand" is not.
Read the Suffix: What Each Brand Encodes in the Catalog Number
The same model name can cover two or three catalog numbers. The suffix is where voltage, plug, refrigeration and what ships in the box are decided.
| Brand | Catalog numbers | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Hermle | Z327 / Z327-E | 120 V US plug / 230 V European plug |
| Hermle | Z327 / Z327-K | Same 18,000 rpm universal frame / refrigerated version |
| Hermle | Z446-750 / Z446-750-AC | 4 × 750 mL swing-out rotor with buckets / rotor without buckets |
| Benchmark Scientific | C2417 / C2417-E | 115 V US plug / 230 V European plug |
| Benchmark Scientific | C1012 / C1012-E | Both 100 to 240 V; only the plug changes |
| Benchmark Scientific | C2417-R / C2417-R-NR | MC-24R with COMBI-Rotor / same unit without a rotor |
| Yamato Scientific | DX-602C / DX-612C | 115 V / 220 V; voltage is the only difference |
| Yamato Scientific | DP-104C | One catalog number; 480 V three-phase only |
| LW Scientific | E8C-U8AF-1503 / E8C-U8AV-1503 / E8C-U8AT-15T3 | E8 fixed speed / variable speed / touchscreen; all 90 to 240 V |
On our Hermle and Benchmark Scientific listings the US and European versions sit on the same page as a Power option, and the catalog number changes with your choice. Copy the catalog number from the option you selected, not from the page title, when you write the request.

Check What Ships in the Box
Rotors, buckets and carriers are where two orders for "the same centrifuge" diverge. A few examples from the catalog:
- The Hermle Z167-M includes its 18 × 1.5/2.0 mL rotor.
- The Benchmark MC-24R ships with its COMBI-Rotor as C2417-R and without a rotor as C2417-R-NR.
- The LW Scientific ZipCombo unit ZCP-BX7D-77T3 ships with no rotors; you add the 6-place microtube, 12-place microhematocrit or 16-place PCR strip rotor you need.
- Hermle's Z446-750-AC is the 4 × 750 mL swing-out rotor with buckets not included.
Weight decides how it ships. A Hermle Z446-K weighs 244 lb and the Yamato ULF901C ultra-low freezer ships at 1,125 lb packed, so both travel by freight, not parcel. Plan the delivery when you place the order.

Buying Through an Authorized Dealer
Brand-name equipment is bought for the brand's warranty and support as much as for the instrument. Benchmark Scientific lists a two-year warranty on its centrifuges, from the MyFuge mini centrifuges to the MC-24R. File the invoice with the instrument's serial number on the day it arrives, because that pairing is what a warranty claim is checked against.
Genuine units with full manufacturer warranty matter for capital equipment. A unit built for another market can carry the wrong plug, voltage and manual, and may fall outside the U.S. warranty. LabSupplies.com is an authorized dealer for every brand we list, and equipment ships from USA inventory.

What to Send Before a Capital Equipment Order
For anything that ships by freight or plugs into a dedicated circuit, send these with your request and we confirm voltage, accessories and the delivery method before the order ships:
| Item | What to confirm | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Full catalog number | Suffix for voltage, plug, refrigeration and rotor | Z327-K, not "Hermle refrigerated centrifuge" |
| Site power | Voltage, phase and plug at the install location | 120 V US outlet, 230 V circuit, or 480 V three-phase |
| Accessories already owned | Rotors, buckets and adapters that must fit | Z326-1050 rotor in service on a Z327 |
| Delivery site | Loading dock or liftgate, doorway and elevator size | No dock; 36 in doorway; freight elevator |
| Vendor setup documents | What your procurement office needs to add us | W-9 on request |
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the -E suffix mean on Hermle and Benchmark Scientific catalog numbers?
It marks the European-plug version. On most Hermle and Benchmark Scientific instruments the -E unit is also the 230 V version, so Z327 is 120 V with a US plug and Z327-E is 230 V with a European plug. On universal-input models such as the Benchmark MyFuge 12 (C1012 and C1012-E) both run on 100 to 240 V and only the plug changes.
How do I justify buying a specific brand of lab equipment?
List the salient characteristics the instrument must meet, such as maximum RCF, capacity, temperature range, voltage and footprint, and document why they are firm requirements, for example rotors or accessories the lab already owns that fit only that brand. FAR 11.104 asks federal buyers for exactly that list, and grant-funded labs follow 2 CFR 200.320 when a purchase can only be filled by a single source. Your procurement office makes the determination.
Do Hermle rotors fit more than one centrifuge?
Many do. Hermle's Z326-series rotors are listed across its universal and high-speed frames. The Z326-02MP microplate rotor, for example, is listed for nine models from the Z307 to the Z36-HK, so a lab that already owns Hermle rotors can often buy a new frame without buying the rotors again. Check the rotor's listed speed limit for your exact model.
Does the Benchmark MC-24R come with a rotor?
The standard MC-24R (C2417-R) ships with the COMBI-Rotor for 24 × 1.5/2.0 mL tubes plus two PCR strips. The C2417-R-NR is the same refrigerated microcentrifuge without a rotor, for labs choosing a different rotor.
What is the difference between the Yamato DX602C and DX612C?
Voltage is the only difference. The DX-602C is the 115 V version of the 153 L natural convection oven and the DX-612C is the 220 V version. Yamato uses the same pattern across its ovens and sterilizers, so confirm your outlet before choosing the catalog number.
