Cold Storage FAQs

Do I need −80°C or is −40°C enough?

Match the range to the sample. Long-term storage of biologicals, cell lines, vaccines and nucleic acids generally calls for −80°C. Working stock, many enzymes and routine frozen inventory are fine at −20°C to −40°C, and a low-temp freezer costs less to buy and to run. If storage is regulated, follow the protocol rather than the convention.

Chest or upright?

Chest models retain cold better because cold air does not fall out when the lid is raised, and they span the widest capacity range. Uprights use far less floor space and are much easier to organize and retrieve from. Chest suits archival storage, upright suits daily access.

What happens if the power fails?

An automatic timer system restarts the unit once power returns, and the battery-backed alarm signals the failure while it is happening. The alarm relay can be wired into building monitoring, and Platinum models will send email or SMS.

Can I get back-up if the refrigeration fails?

Yes. Optional CO2 and liquid-nitrogen back-up systems are available, along with inventory racks, chart recorders and cold-safety gloves. Tell us your sample-box or rack count and we will spec the combination.

How do these ship?

Undercounter and small chest units ship parcel from US inventory. Large chest and upright freezers ship by freight because of size and weight, confirmed before you are charged.
