Freezer boxes fall into three material families, and the right one depends almost entirely on how cold your samples go and how many freeze-thaw cycles the box will see. Cardboard is the low-cost choice for -20°C and routine -80°C use. Corrugated polypropylene survives repeated -80°C cycling and wipes down after spills. Polycarbonate is the only family rated for liquid nitrogen vapor phase at -196°C.

Cardboard

Coated cardboard boxes are the workhorse of -20°C and -80°C storage. They ship flat, cost the least per position, and are easy to write on directly. The tradeoff is moisture: cardboard absorbs condensation over repeated openings, and a box that has been frosted and thawed several times will soften, swell, and eventually bind inside a rack. Treat them as consumable rather than permanent infrastructure.

Cardboard is a poor choice for liquid nitrogen. Boxes stored in LN2 vapor phase pick up moisture that can freeze the lid shut, and any box that contacts liquid phase is unusable.

Corrugated polypropylene

Corrugated PP is the middle option and the one most labs should default to for working -80°C inventories. It resists moisture completely, tolerates repeated freeze-thaw without deforming, and can be decontaminated with standard disinfectants. Many designs ship flat-pack and assemble without tools, so you get plastic durability without paying for shipping air.

PP film boxes are a variant worth knowing: a rigid frame with a waterproof film construction, rated to -80°C, that costs less than solid polycarbonate while still being wipeable.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is the only family you should put in liquid nitrogen vapor phase. It holds dimensional stability down to -196°C, is autoclavable, and lasts for years of cycling. It is the highest cost per position and the heaviest, so reserve it for irreplaceable archival material rather than routine working stock.

Match the box to the tube, not the other way round

Well count is set by tube diameter, not by preference. Standard grids are 81-place (9×9) for 1.5–2 mL microtubes and cryovials, 100-place (10×10) for 0.5 mL tubes, 25-place for 5 mL tubes, and 36-place for 15 mL conicals. Dropping a 2 mL vial into a 100-place grid means it will not seat; running 0.5 mL tubes in an 81-place grid wastes roughly a fifth of your freezer volume.

If your tube format changed but your boxes did not, replacement cryogenic box dividers are far cheaper than replacing whole boxes. Dividers are available in 49, 64, 81, and 100-well configurations, and there are separate divider sets for 15 mL and 50 mL conicals.

Labeling and inventory that survives the freezer

Whatever material you choose, the box is only as useful as its label. Ordinary adhesive labels lift at -80°C and inks smear on thaw.
