A cable cutter uses a shear action — the blades bypass each other like scissors, so copper and aluminium conductors are cut through cleanly instead of being flattened. A diagonal cutter wedges the metal apart and leaves the conductor deformed, which is a problem when the cut end has to go into a lug or a terminal. Use a cable cutter on stranded cable and keep the diagonals for wire.
