Knot or crimped — what is the difference?

Knotted wire is twisted into stiff bundles, which makes it the aggressive choice for heavy scale, weld slag, rust and paint removal. Crimped wire is left loose and springy for a softer face, which suits general cleaning, light deburring and finishing where a knot brush would be too aggressive.

When do I need a stainless steel brush instead of carbon steel?

Whenever you are working on stainless or aluminium. A carbon steel brush leaves embedded steel particles behind, and those particles rust — which is exactly the contamination stainless was chosen to avoid. This is the most common and most expensive brush mistake.

What does wire diameter change?

The finer the wire the gentler the finish and the more it conforms to a shape. The coarser the wire the faster it cuts and the longer it lasts. A .006" fill cleans without marking; a .023" fill takes scale off.

Will a wire brush damage the surface?

A knot brush in carbon steel will mark most surfaces. Where that matters, use crimped wire, a finer diameter, or an abrasive nylon brush, which cuts without gouging.
