Choosing a Streamlight for a Laboratory or Plant Environment

Four questions decide the model. Lumens is the least useful of them on its own.

Question Why it decides the model What to look for on the listing
Is the atmosphere classified? A light that is merely sealed is not approved for a flammable atmosphere. Approval is granted for a specific Class, Division and Group. The approval marking, stated per model in the intrinsically safe table below. If your area is unclassified, this does not apply.
Beam distance or flood? Candela governs how far a beam throws; lumens only totals the output. A 1,000-lumen flood and a 1,000-lumen spot behave completely differently. Candela and beam distance per mode, published on every product page.
Run time at which mode? A headline run time is usually quoted at low output. The figure that matters is run time at the mode you will actually use. Run time listed separately for high, medium and low.
Alkaline or rechargeable? Rechargeables need a charger location and a battery replacement cycle. Alkaline and lithium primaries do not, but add consumable cost — and lithium cells carry shipping restrictions. Battery type and the charger configurations offered as options.

Hazardous Locations

Intrinsically Safe Flashlights and Headlamps — Class I Division 1 and Division 2

Where solvent vapor, hydrogen or fuel gas can reach an ignitable concentration, a light has to be approved for the atmosphere it enters — sealed and rugged are not the same thing. An approval states three separate facts, and all three have to match your area.

Class — what is in the air

Class I covers flammable gases, vapors and liquids: solvents, fuel, hydrogen. That is the class for solvent stores, fume hoods where flammables are handled, fuel systems and gas generators. Class II covers combustible dust and Class III ignitable fibers — separate approvals, which the lights below do not carry.

Division — how often it is there

Division 1 means an ignitable mixture is expected during normal work: open transfers, routine venting, the space right above a solvent bath. Division 2 means it appears only when something fails — a leak, a dropped bottle, ventilation loss. A Division 1 light may be used in a Division 2 area. A Division 2 light may never be used in Division 1.

Group — which chemical

Class I is subdivided by what is present: A acetylene, B hydrogen, C ethylene, D propane and most common solvents. A light approved for Group D alone is not approved beside a hydrogen generator, which is Group B. The groups are printed on the light — read them against your own area classification before you buy.

Intrinsically safe is not a synonym for explosion-proof. An explosion-proof enclosure contains an ignition inside itself; an intrinsically safe light limits its circuit energy so it cannot cause one. Portable lighting for a classified area is specified as intrinsically safe, and that is what every model below carries.

Streamlight Specification and Ordering FAQs

Which Streamlight models are intrinsically safe?
The Haz-Lo® and ProPolymer® Division 1 and Division 2 ranges. The table above lists each model carried here with the Class and Division marking that appears on the light. Approval is specific to a Class, Division and Group — match it to your own area classification, and do not substitute a non-approved model into a classified area because it looks similar.
What is the difference between Division 1 and Division 2?
Division 1 covers areas where a flammable atmosphere is expected in normal operation. Division 2 covers areas where it is present only under abnormal conditions, such as a containment failure. A Division 1 light may be used in a Division 2 area; the reverse is not permitted.
Is an intrinsically safe flashlight the same as explosion-proof?
No, and the distinction matters when you are specifying. "Explosion-proof" describes an enclosure built to contain an internal explosion — the term belongs to fixed equipment such as motors and junction boxes. A portable intrinsically safe flashlight works the opposite way: its circuit is limited so it cannot release enough energy to ignite the atmosphere in the first place. Portable lighting for a classified area is specified as intrinsically safe and marked with a Class, Division and Group — which is what the models in the table above carry. Buyers often search for an "explosion-proof flashlight" and an intrinsically safe light is what they need.
Do you carry ATEX-certified Streamlight models?
Not in this range. ATEX and IECEx are the European and international schemes; Streamlight builds ATEX variants of several models, but the lights listed here carry the North American Class I Division 1 and Division 2 approvals instead. If your site is governed by ATEX or IECEx, send the part number through the contact form and we will confirm whether an equivalent certified variant exists before you order.
How water-resistant and impact-resistant are these flashlights?
It is stated per model rather than as a blanket claim, because it varies across the range. Streamlight publishes an IP rating and a drop-test figure for each light — the ProTac® HL-X, for example, is IP68-rated, dust-tight, waterproof to 2 meters and tested to a 2-meter impact. Both figures appear in the specification table on the product page, alongside the C4® LED output data.
Do you list candela and run time, or only lumens?
Both, per output mode. Each product page carries Streamlight's own specification table — lumens, candela, beam distance and run time for high, medium and low, plus strobe run time where the model has one. Candela and beam distance are what tell you how far the light actually throws.
Which lights have no lithium shipping restriction?
The alkaline ProPolymer® range and any model that takes AA, AAA or C cells. Models containing lithium cells ship by ground within the contiguous United States; air transport, and some destinations including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, are restricted under 49 CFR and IATA lithium-battery rules. Every product page states which applies.
Are these genuine Streamlight products?
Yes. Every item is genuine Streamlight stock supplied through the industrial wholesale channel in original manufacturer packaging. Nothing is repackaged, relabeled or sold as a component.
What warranty applies?
Streamlight covers its lights under a limited lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship, excluding batteries, chargers, switches and electronics, which carry shorter terms. Warranty service is handled by Streamlight directly; full terms are published on streamlight.com.
Where are Streamlight products made?
It varies by model — Streamlight manufactures in Eagleville, Pennsylvania and also sources overseas. Country of origin is recorded per part number rather than per brand, so ask for the specific item if origin matters to your purchase; we do not apply a blanket origin claim to the range.
Can I order a case?
Yes. Where Streamlight packs a model by the box or case, that pack appears as its own option on the product page with the unit count spelled out, so there is no ambiguity about how many lights a case contains.
