VEE GEE 6603DS-1S is the compact short-form dual-scale borosilicate glass hydrometer reading both Specific Gravity (1.000 to 1.225) and Baumé Heavy (0° to 26°) on the same stem, 165 mm overall length. It covers the same measurement range as the full-size 6603DS-1 (305 mm) but in a compact format suited to smaller sample containers, field use, or bench-space-limited labs. Calibrated at 15°C (60°F). Subdivisions: 0.005 SG / 1° Baumé. Autoclavable.

Features & Benefits

  • 165 mm Compact Format — Same Range as 6603DS-1: At 165 mm (6.5 in), the 6603DS-1S fits in smaller hydrometer cylinders and graduated cylinders where the full 305 mm instrument would not. It covers SG 1.000–1.225 / 0–26° Baumé Heavy — slightly wider than the 6603DS-1 (to SG 1.220) due to the compressed scale on the shorter stem.
  • Dual Scale — Specific Gravity and Baumé Heavy: Read both SG and Baumé Heavy simultaneously — no conversion tables required. Covers dilute brines, sugar solutions, weak acids, and other aqueous solutions with specific gravities at or above water.
  • Subdivisions: 0.005 SG / 1° Baumé: Practical resolution for process and QC measurement in routine laboratory and industrial applications.
  • Calibrated at 15°C (60°F): Factory-calibrated at the standard reference temperature for density and specific gravity measurement, consistent with ASTM and international standards.
  • Borosilicate Glass Construction: Chemically resistant; transparent for clear meniscus reading; autoclavable at 121°C.
  • Made in USA: VEE GEE Scientific hydrometer manufactured to USA quality standards.
  • 1-Year Warranty: Backed by VEE GEE Scientific's standard instrument warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 6603DS-1S less accurate than the 6603DS-1 because it is shorter?
The short-form format compresses the scale over a shorter stem length, which slightly reduces the spacing between graduation marks compared to the full-size 305 mm instrument. For most routine QC and process-control applications the 0.005 SG / 1° Baumé subdivisions are adequate. For applications requiring the highest read accuracy at a single point in the range, the full-length 6603DS-1 is generally preferred due to wider graduation spacing. Both instruments are calibrated at 15°C (60°F) to the same standard.

Why does the 6603DS-1S go to SG 1.225 while the 6603DS-1 only goes to SG 1.220?
The slightly extended upper SG range (1.225 vs. 1.220) in the short-form is common with compressed-scale hydrometers — fitting the same physical measurement range onto a shorter stem naturally shifts the endpoint slightly. The difference is 5 SG units (0.005) and is not operationally significant for most applications.
