The Globe Scientific Photo Port Adapter with 0.5x Lens (EOX-9850) connects C-mount cameras with 1/2-inch sensors to the photo port of Oxion (revision 2) microscopes. The integrated 0.5x reduction lens matches the microscope's optical path to the camera sensor, ensuring full-field coverage without vignetting — a dark ring at the image edges that occurs when the sensor receives an image circle larger than it can capture.

Why a 0.5x Reduction Lens Is Necessary

Microscope optical systems project an image circle designed for 22-25mm diameter eyepiece fields of view. A 1/2-inch camera sensor measures approximately 6.4 x 4.8mm — far smaller than the projected image circle. Without a reduction lens, the camera captures only the center of the field, missing the periphery and effectively reducing your observable area. The 0.5x lens in the EOX-9850 reduces the image circle to match the 1/2-inch sensor, so the camera captures the same full field you see through the eyepieces.

Compatible Cameras

  • CMEX-5 Pro (EDC-5000-PRO) — 5MP, 1/2.5-inch sensor

  • CMEX-10 Pro (EDC-10000-PRO) — 10MP, 1/2.3-inch sensor

  • CMEX-18 Pro (EDC-18000-PRO) — 18MP, 1/2.3-inch sensor

  • Ultra HD 4K (EVC-3042) — 8.3MP, 1/1.8-inch Sony sensor

EOX-9850 vs. EAE-5120-2: Which Adapter Do You Need?

If you are mounting the HD-Mini camera (EVC-3024-HDS) on an Oxion microscope, use the EAE-5120-2 (23.2mm tube adapter) instead. The EOX-9850 is specifically designed for the CMEX Pro series and Ultra HD 4K cameras listed above. Using the wrong adapter will result in either vignetting (wrong reduction) or mechanical incompatibility.

When You Need This Adapter vs. When You Don't

You need the EOX-9850 if: you have an Oxion (revision 2) or Oxion Inverso microscope AND you want to use a CMEX Pro series camera (5MP, 10MP, or 18MP) or the Ultra HD 4K camera. The 0.5x reduction lens matches these cameras' smaller sensors to the microscope's image circle. You do NOT need this adapter if: you are using the HD-Mini camera (use the EAE-5120-2 instead), or if your microscope is any model other than the Oxion (iScope, bScope, BioBlue, NexiusZoom, StereoBlue, and Delphi-X Observer all use standard 23.2mm tubes that accept cameras directly).

What Happens Without a 0.5x Reduction Lens

If you connect a CMEX Pro or 4K camera to the Oxion without the EOX-9850, the camera will produce images — but they will show only the center portion of the field with a dark circular border (vignetting). The microscope projects an image circle much larger than the camera sensor can capture. The 0.5x lens shrinks the projected image to match the sensor, eliminating vignetting and ensuring the camera sees the same full field visible through the eyepieces. The image quality through the 0.5x lens is optically matched to the Oxion's objective system for sharp, distortion-free digital capture.
