The Globe Scientific iScope Binocular Phase Contrast Microscope (EIS-1152-PLPHI) provides the full Zernike phase contrast and darkfield optical system of the iScope platform in a binocular configuration. Plan phase PLPHI 10/20/S40/S100x oil IOS objectives, a Zernike disc condenser with darkfield stop, and EWF 10x/22mm eyepieces deliver the same image quality as the trinocular models — without the third camera port. This is the most cost-effective way to put iScope-level phase contrast at a workstation that does not require digital imaging.
When Binocular Is the Right Choice
Every trinocular microscope directs a portion of light to the camera port, even when no camera is attached. In a binocular microscope, 100% of the light reaches the eyepieces, producing the brightest possible visual image. Choose this binocular model for student teaching stations (where digital imaging is handled by a separate instructor microscope), for clinical workstations focused exclusively on visual examination, or whenever budget allows only one phase contrast microscope and no camera is needed. If you later decide you need imaging, the trinocular EIS-1153-PLPHI accepts C-mount cameras.
Phase Contrast and Darkfield Dual Mode
The Zernike disc condenser includes phase annuli matched to each PLPHI objective and a darkfield stop on one rotating turret. Phase contrast makes transparent, unstained cellular structures visible without staining. Darkfield illumination produces bright specimens on a black background — particularly useful for detecting bacteria, crystals, and fine particulate matter. Switching modes requires only rotating the condenser disc.
Optical Configuration
Eyepieces: EWF 10x/22mm (22mm field of view)
Objectives: Plan phase PLPHI 10x/20x/S40x/S100x oil IOS
Condenser: Zernike phase contrast disc with darkfield stop
Stage: Rackless with ergonomic controls
Illumination: 3W NeoLED Koehler
Head: Binocular with height-adjustable eye tubes
Applications
Teaching microscopy courses in phase contrast and darkfield technique, student workstations in university biology and medical programs, clinical hematology and urinalysis where visual examination suffices without photodocumentation, veterinary clinical practice, and routine parasitology. The darkfield mode adds capability for syphilis spirochete examination and crystal identification in synovial fluid analysis.
