Standard tube racks hold tubes upright — but when you tilt the rack to decant liquid from the tubes, the tubes fall out. Globe Scientific's Grip Rack solves this problem with rubber tube grippers that physically hold each tube in place, allowing the entire loaded rack to be inverted for decanting without any tube dislodging. The POM (polyoxymethylene) body provides the rigidity of engineering-grade plastic, and the rubber grippers exert consistent radial clamping force across all 50 tube positions simultaneously when the rack is inverted — so the entire batch decants in one motion rather than tube-by-tube.

Available in two tube-size configurations: up to 17mm (456920 Blue, 456921 Orange, $41.40/EA) for standard test tubes and many centrifuge tubes; and up to 15mm with Tube Eject feature (456925 Blue, 456926 Orange, $50.50/EA) for 15mm centrifuge tubes — the Eject version adds a mechanism to push all tubes out of the grippers simultaneously for batch removal after decanting. Both autoclavable at 121°C.

Features and Benefits

  • Rubber Grippers for Inversion Decanting: Each of the 50 tube positions has a rubber gripper that physically secures the tube. The entire loaded rack can be inverted to decant liquid from all 50 tubes simultaneously without any tube falling — enabling efficient batch decanting in cell culture, pellet washing, and precipitation protocols.

  • Tube Eject Feature (456925/456926 only): The 15mm Eject versions add a tube-ejector mechanism that simultaneously releases all tubes from the grippers after decanting, enabling fast batch tube removal from the rack without individually pulling each tube against gripper resistance.

  • POM Body for Engineering-Grade Rigidity: Polyoxymethylene (POM/Delrin) provides higher dimensional stability and rigidity than standard PP or nylon under the mechanical stresses of repeated inversion loading — the rack maintains its flat form under the weight of 50 full tubes during inversion without flexing or distorting.

  • 50-Place Capacity for Batch Processing: 50 tube positions support standard batch sizes for cell culture, bacterial culture, and washing protocols, and allow the entire batch to be decanted, washed, and re-loaded without splitting into smaller sub-batches.

  • Autoclavable at 121°C: Both POM body and rubber grippers are rated for 121°C autoclave sterilization, making the Grip Rack appropriate for sterile cell culture and tissue culture workflows where all equipment must be sterilized before use.

Laboratory Applications

  • Inversion decanting for cell culture pellet washing — centrifuge the tubes in the rack, invert the entire loaded Grip Rack to decant supernatant from all 50 tubes simultaneously, add wash buffer, and repeat, without touching individual tubes between decanting and resuspension steps

  • Precipitation and wash workflows in protein chemistry, nucleic acid purification, and immunology where the entire batch of pellet-containing tubes must be inverted and drained without disturbing the pelleted material

  • Sterile technique cell culture using the autoclavable POM/rubber construction — sterilize the rack before use, load sterile tubes, and process through inversion decanting steps within the biosafety cabinet without risk of contamination from tube handling

Frequently Asked Questions

Which version should I order — 17mm (456920/921) or 15mm with Eject (456925/926)?
Order the 17mm version if your tubes are up to 17mm OD (covers most test tubes and many centrifuge tube formats) and tube removal from the rack is easy in your workflow. Order the 15mm with Eject version if your tubes are up to 15mm OD AND you want fast batch tube removal — the ejector simultaneously pushes all tubes out of the grippers, which saves significant time when processing 50-tube batches repeatedly.

What is POM and why is it used for this rack?
POM (polyoxymethylene), also sold as Delrin®, is an engineering thermoplastic with significantly higher rigidity, hardness, and dimensional stability than PP or nylon. For a rack that bears the full weight of 50 loaded tubes when inverted, POM's stiffness ensures the rack does not flex or deform under load — maintaining gripper alignment across all 50 positions during inversion.
