Specimen Containers

Specimen containers from Caplugs Evergreen and Globe Scientific. They include 4 oz and 6.5 oz graduated cups (some with a temperature strip and pour spout), 20 mL Histo-Click histology containers, threaded containers from 60 to 150 mL, wide-mouth containers from 250 to 900 mL, and HDPE press-close tubs from 8 oz to 165 oz. They come sterile and non-sterile, with screw caps and paper lids also sold on their own.

How to choose

Sterile, aseptic or non-sterile?

Sterile containers are for anything going to culture, such as urine for microbiology, where a contaminant shows up as a false positive. Aseptically manufactured containers (Globe's ISO 8 range) are made in a controlled environment without being terminally sterilized, which suits routine urinalysis. Non-sterile containers are for chemistry, fixed tissue, and industrial or environmental samples.

What is the temperature strip for?

It confirms a urine specimen is freshly voided. In DOT-regulated drug testing, the collector reads the temperature within four minutes of collection and it must fall between 90 °F and 100 °F (32–38 °C). A strip on the container lets that happen without a separate thermometer touching the specimen.

How much fixative does a tissue specimen need?

The usual guidance is 10 to 20 times the volume of the tissue in formalin, so the container is chosen by fixative volume, not by the size of the specimen. The 20 mL Histo-Click containers suit small biopsies. The wide-mouth 250 to 900 mL containers suit larger resections that need room for fixative on every side.

What does 'unassembled' mean?

The caps are packed loose rather than screwed on, and you fit them at the point of use. Replacement screw caps and paper lids are also listed on their own, in the same sizes and colors.
