How the numbers work

Reading an arc rating

Three numbers appear on arc flash PPE and they are not interchangeable.

Arc rating (ATPV)

Calories per square centimetre the fabric was tested to withstand before the onset of a second-degree burn. This is the number you filter on above.

PPE category

A banding used by NFPA 70E — category 2 and 4 are the common ones. A category is a convenience label; the cal/cm² figure is the measurement.

Incident energy

What the equipment can actually deliver at your working distance. It comes from an engineering study of your installation, not from the garment.

Why Oberon

You can read the wire colours through it

A traditional arc flash window is tinted heavily enough that colour recognition goes with it — a real problem when the task is identifying conductors inside an energised panel.

TCG — True Color Grey

Oberon’s near-clear grey window. They state it gives true colour acuity, with anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings.

Rated as a system

On the kits the hood, coat and bib carry one rating together, which is how the garments are tested.

What does cal/cm² mean on arc flash clothing?

It is the arc rating — the incident energy the fabric was tested to withstand before the onset of a second-degree burn, in calories per square centimetre. It is a property of the garment, stated by the maker on the label, not a property of the job.

Where does the rating I need come from?

From your own incident-energy analysis or arc flash study for that equipment and task, which is what NFPA 70E requires an employer to have. LabSupplies does not determine it and cannot tell you which rating applies to your work. Bring the figure from your study and filter on it.

What does TCG mean on Oberon hoods and shields?

True Color Grey — Oberon’s near-clear grey window. Traditional arc flash windows are tinted heavily enough that conductor colours are hard to read through them. Oberon state the TCG window gives true colour acuity with anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings.

Do the suits come in tall and short cuts?

Yes, and the cut is filterable in its own column. Oberon build regular, tall, short and extra-tall on most garments, and the cut is part of the part number rather than a separate option — TCG4B-2XL is regular, TCG4B-T2XL is tall, TCG4B-Z2XL is extra tall.

What do the HVS and HVSL suffixes mean?

Oberon’s hood ventilation options. A part number ending +HVS carries the hood ventilation system; +HVSL carries the ventilation system with the LED light. They are different part numbers at different prices, so they are listed separately.

Can I order a single garment rather than a kit?

Yes. Coats, bib overalls, coveralls and hoods are all listed on their own at the same ratings as the kits. The kits exist because hood, coat and bib are rated together as a system.
