Common questions

What does non-sparking actually mean, and when do I need it?

A non-sparking tool is made from an alloy that will not throw an incendive friction spark when it is struck or dragged. EGA uses copper beryllium (Cu-Be) and aluminium bronze (Al-Bron). They are specified for work in classified areas — refineries, chemical plants, solvent stores, battery rooms — where a spark is an ignition source. 296 of the tools listed here are non-sparking; the Spark behaviour filter shows which.

What is the difference between copper beryllium and aluminium bronze?

Both are non-sparking, non-magnetic and corrosion resistant. Copper beryllium is the harder of the two, so it holds an edge and a flank better under repeated high-torque work, and it is what EGA uses for almost all of this range. Aluminium bronze is the softer, lower-cost alloy. Each listing states its own alloy in the Material column.

What does 1000V insulated mean on a screwdriver or plier?

It is the VDE standard for live working: the tool is insulated and individually tested to 1000V AC. It is required for work on or near energised conductors up to that voltage. 35 tools here carry it — use the Insulation filter. Insulation is about electrical safety; it is a separate property from non-sparking, and a few tools are both.

Do you list metric or imperial sizes?

Both, and they are filtered separately. EGA builds the same tool in both systems, so the Measurement filter splits Metric from Imperial before you scroll a size list — the Wrenches shelf alone carries 103 distinct sizes. Drive sizes run 1/4" to 1-1/2".

Are these single tools or sets?

Almost all are single tools, sold one at a time. A small number of lines are multi-piece sets and say so in the description — for example EGA's 8-piece non-sparking combination wrench set spanning 5/16" to 3/4". Check the description before ordering: a set and a single tool of the same nominal size are different part numbers.
