Tyvek, Tychem or ProShield — which do I need?
ProShield is the lighter-weight fabric, for dry particulates and non-hazardous liquids. Tyvek is flash-spun high-density polyethylene and stops fine particulates and light liquid splash — the general-purpose barrier. Tychem is the chemical range: 2000 for splash from a defined chemical list, 4000 for a broader range, 5000 for heavy-duty hazmat work, and 6000 for the highest barrier and Level A and B ensembles.
What difference does the seam make?
More than most people expect. Serged seams are stitched only, so the seam is the lowest-barrier part of the garment — which makes a serged garment a particulate garment even when the fabric is a chemical barrier. Bound seams are stitched then covered, raising splash resistance. Taped seams are sealed over the stitch line so the seam matches the fabric. Liquid-tight work needs taped seams.
What does the FC in Tyvek 400 FC mean?
FC is a limited-flame-spread treatment applied to the same Tyvek barrier. It is not a higher chemical or particulate rating, and it is not flame-resistant clothing in the arc-flash sense — it means the garment will not sustain a flame.
Do I need attached hood, socks or boot flaps?
Attached components remove the joins that a separate hood or boot cover leaves. On chemical work those joins are where contamination gets in, which is why hazmat specifications call for attached socks with outer boot flaps rather than separate covers.
How should a disposable coverall fit?
Loose. A protective coverall is worn over clothing and needs room to move without stressing the seams — a garment that fits like normal clothing will split at the shoulders and crotch when the wearer bends or reaches.
