Choosing a sample cup

  • Analyser compatibility first. Cup geometry is dictated by the instrument's probe travel and carousel. Match the platform before anything else.
  • Bottom profile. Conical bottoms concentrate small residual volumes under the probe; flat and round bottoms suit larger draws and freestanding use.
  • Dead volume. The smallest cup that holds your sample plus probe clearance wastes the least specimen — this matters most on paediatric and difficult draws.
  • Nesting cups. Nesting designs drop into 12, 13 or 16 mm primary tubes so a short-draw sample can still be presented at probe height.

Choosing a cuvette

  • Path length. 10 mm is the spectrophotometry standard; confirm before substituting.
  • Material and wavelength. Polystyrene is the economical choice for visible-range work; PMMA and methacrylate extend into the near-UV; borosilicate glass and quartz are required further into the UV.
  • Clear sides. Two-clear-side cuvettes are standard for single-beam reads; semi-micro and micro formats reduce the volume needed per read.
  • Segments and racks. Some analysers take cuvettes as pre-loaded segments or racks rather than singles.
